I always end up buying something for my classroom through the year. I’ve been fortunate to have worked for schools with administrators and departments heads that do their best to take care of teachers, but there’s always something I really want for my classroom that just isn’t covered.
Well, I’ve never used these expenses for classroom materials as a tax deduction, but I’ve heard other people talk about doing it for years. I just never have. I guess it seemed like too much on top of everything else. But this year, I’m going to do it.
According to the IRS website (Click here), I need to keep receipts for anything I buy for my classroom, and I can deduct up to $250 in “qualified expenses” when figuring up my adjusted gross income.
So I’ve already labeled a file folder “Educator Deduction Expenses,” and I already have two receipts to put in it (more on what I’ve bought later…). I’m going to put it inside my “Taxes” folder, so I won’t forget about it when tax time rolls around!
