The First English 10 Teams of 2008-09

I have four English 10 classes this year: two advanced and two regular level, and a few weeks ago, I divided them up into teams. Two of the English 10 SOLs are related to cooperative learning, so working in groups isn’t optional for these students!

We’ll be changing groups at least once or twice throughout the year, so that everyone will have an opportunity to work with different kinds of people. The teams will work together on a variety of activities, some more structured than others, and each student will participate in a variety of ways.

One of the teams’ first activities is a get-to-know-each-other one. They find out what they have in common, choose a name and mascot, and design a team flag. (I’ll try to post the sheet from school this week.) Then, I take their pictures in whatever way they want. So here they are:

    It’s not hard to tell the “regular” English from the “advanced.” That’s what 37 years of teaching does for you! Cute idea for the groups. I may try it!

    Thanks, Maryellen! Let me know how it works for you! I went to your site and was intrigued to see that you’re an AVID coordinator in Italy. We used AVID here at my school for a few years, and I still use some of the techniques I learned from it, but I don’t believe we’re affiliated this year… And Italy is one of the top countries on my Must See list!!

    What was the criteria for determining which student was placed on what team? I like the idea of having established team members for a specified time period.

    Although I’ve grouped students a lot of different ways in the past, the first teams are usually the luck of the draw. I’ll be reorganizing my tenth-graders’ teams at the end of the first semester (around mid-January) and this time, I’ll most likely use my knowledge of students’ skills, motivation, and temperaments to guide me.
