An interesting interview with a self-appointed “techno-realist.”

I just wrote a little poem from a one-word prompt:

A streak in the sky
you left me hanging out to dry
gone to some resort town
while I sit here all a-frown
and wait
for fate

When @oneworddotcom posted its pithy “word up” tweet today, I clicked on it as I have so many times before. It took me to oneword.com as it always does. I clicked “Go,” and there was the prompt: STREAK.

So, as usual, I started typing.

Only, this time, instead of getting irritated and closing the page without saving after the one-minute timer ran out, I decided that no matter what came out of my twisted brain, it was going to be a keeper. :D

So I did it. I typed in my name and e-mail (which is not posted) and clicked “submit.”

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not in love with it or anything. I don’t even really know where it’s coming from. I mean, that’s not about me, and I don’t know who it is about.

But maybe it’s a something-else trying to come out. . .Who knows? Even if it’s just it and a bad it at that, it is. I may as well let it breathe a little.

The Multi-Disciplinary Center at Zionsville High School, near Indianapolis, sounds like a really interesting place to be. According to the above article, students apply to be a part of the program for their senior year and are chosen mostly based on their maturity level. Selected students choose a thesis topic, and their coursework all relates somehow to researching it.

Know your States

Well, I thought I knew them better than I did for this online puzzle-type test! The first one I got was a doozy: Wyoming.

Wow. Yeah. Well. I know where Wyoming is on a map that’s marked with state outlines. This quiz is not!

The “edge” states are pretty easy, since the oceans and gulf mark their borders jaggedly. But the New England states? I still messed those up pretty badly, even after I had a few in place.

It’s definitely worth a try! And it would make a great learning tool for geography students, especially.

ON COURSE: Jeopardy Review

This is a great lesson plan for a student-generated review of any kind of material. Students work in groups to develop Jeopardy-style questions and answers for the category they’ve been assigned. (Each group is given a different category.)

I stumbled upon the On Course site last year and signed up for their email newsletter. The program is aimed at colleges and universities, but I’ve been able to adapt several ideas for my high-school classes.
